VIOLIN TUITION FOR ADULT BEGINNERS

About Andrea Atkinson

After completing my music degree 30 years ago, I began my teaching career by taking on private pupils at home.  I soon began working with the Croydon Music Teaching Agency teaching violin in state primary, secondary schools and colleges alongside teaching violin and recorder in private schools in the south east area.

At about the same time, I was lucky enough to be supported by Richard Stilgoe and his Orpheus Trust to begin working as a music tutor at The Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People in Leatherhead, building a person centred music curriculum.  A few years into this position I co-founded The Freewheelers Theatre Company which was initially an in house touring company.  After moving into the community in 2006 it soon became a charity touring shows throughout the South East Area and London, is the recipient of the Queens Award for Voluntary Service and is still going strong today.

I decided to step away from my position there as music and dance director two years ago and am now rebuilding my private violin teaching business.

Alongside my teaching career, I have been a freelance musician playing in orchestras accompanying choral concerts and have played in ‘the pit’ and on stage for shows in most of the theatres in the South East area.

Why Adult Learners?

I am particularly keen to teach adults of all ages who have maybe always wanted to learn violin but for one reason or another were never able to.  I am a true believer in the unique power of music to help us in every area of our lives.  Among its benefits are:

  • Building self-esteem and confidence

  • Opportunity to learn the skill of reading music

  • Improving hand to eye coordination

  • Improving arm and core strength

  • Training your ear to improvise

  • Improving your sense of rhythm

It is absolutely never too late to learn a new skill!

What to expect in a lesson

Lessons are person centred, moulded around what you want to get out of them. Maybe that Is learning to play simple tunes for your own sense of achievement or to impress family and friends or with a goal to join an orchestra or take an exam.

Lessons are completely non-judgemental, relaxed, fun and gives you some ‘you’ time

Where lessons take place

I am based in the East Grinstead Area and most lessons will be at my home however I am able to come to you if mobility is an issue for you (additional charges may apply depending on distance travelled)
